Akessa Healthcare requires a Consultant Anaesthetist provide anaesthetic cover for planned surgery across our hospital sites. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a hugely reputable organisation and provide the highest standards of care.
The appointment will be based at Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital in Aylesbury and The New Foscote Hospital in Banbury. With the expansion of the Group and the opening of the additional state-of-the-art operating theatres, this is an exciting time to join our growing team to provide clinical excellence for our patients at both hospitals.
The role is for 10 sessions with no on-call commitments. Applications for a part-time role, minimum 5 sessions, will also be considered. Anaesthetic cover is for planned surgery only, covering a wide range of cases, including: orthopaedic, general surgery, urology, gynaecology, plastic surgery, ENT, oral and maxillofacial surgery. Theatre lists are varied but structured with protected admin time.
The appointee has an option to be enrolled as self-employed consultant under practicing privileges or employed by the hospital on sessional basis. There is currently a long waiting list for surgery and the full lists are on offer.
As an elective surgical centre, the vast majority of patients are ASA I and II. Preoperative assessments are completed online using the “Life Box” IT system. For preoperative assessment and preparation of patients with more complex needs, input and support from other senior consultants is available and encouraged.

The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital was established in Aylesbury in 1832 and has provided services and treatments to thousands of people from across the region. The ownership of the hospital was transferred to our new management team in January 2023. By joining our existing portfolio, the hospital is now run as a professionally and provides clinical care to private, insured and NHS patients, with a strong ethos on caring for our staff.
Significant ongoing investment into both hospitals includes complete refurbishment of the wards, the outpatient area, reception, staff facilities, radiology and the construction of additional operating theatres and endoscopy suites.

Duties and responsibilities:
Deliver high-quality anaesthetic care for all patients and support the smooth running of the surgical lists.
Support efficient theatre utilisation for the effective management of resources and maintenance of our short waiting lists for private, insured and NHS patients.
Take ownership in the successful performance against key performance indicators, ensuring zero compromise to the quality of care or clinical excellence for patients.
In collaboration with other colleagues, maintain and develop quality standards and improvement throughout the theatre department and in line with any relevant accreditation requirements.
Provide clinical anaesthetic advice as and when needed, supporting pre operative assessment nurses,
Liaise with other specialities, such as cardiologists, chest physicians regarding individual patient’s care as and when required.
Who were looking for:
Full GMC Registration with entry on the GMC Specialist Register
The successful candidate should have wide anaesthetic experience and be on the Specialist Register with the GMC
Currently employed, or has previously held substantive NHS consultant post
Eligible to register with private medical insurance companies (BUPA, AXA-PPP etc)
An interest in pain management would be an advantage
An individual with the ability to learn and champion internal and external IT systems.
An agile, dynamic and dependable individual able to work flexibly and respond to urgent matters whilst following instructions/agreed processes.
